Remembering the Stonewall Riots: 55 Years of LGBTQ+ Resistance

This June marks the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history. While the anniversary is officially in June, February is Black History Month—a crucial time to acknowledge the intersectionality of LGBTQ+ rights and the contributions of Black activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Stormé DeLarverie, who played critical roles in the uprising.

For those who may not know, the Stonewall Riots began on June 28, 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. But instead of staying silent, the community fought back. This act of resistance ignited the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and led to the creation of Pride as we know it today.

"History isn’t something you look back at and say it was inevitable. It happens because people make decisions that are sometimes very impulsive and of the moment, but those moments are cumulative realities." – Marsha P. Johnson

This February, as we reflect on both LGBTQ+ history and Black History Month, let’s remember that the fight for equality has always been led by the most marginalized- Black trans women, drag queens, and gender-nonconforming individuals who put everything on the line. Their courage paved the way for the rights we have today, but the work is far from over.

Even now, LGBTQ+ communities face discrimination, especially trans and nonbinary people, who continue to fight for visibility and safety. The best way to honor the legacy of Stonewall is to keep pushing forward—through activism, education, and unwavering solidarity.

"No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us." – Marsha P. Johnson

As we approach this anniversary, let’s remember that resistance is powerful, history matters, and the fight for equality continues. Whether it’s supporting LGBTQ+ businesses, advocating for inclusive policies, or simply amplifying marginalized voices, we all have a role to play in shaping a better future. ✊🏽🏳️‍🌈
